Gospel of Thomas with Doug and Noa: Logion 33

Logion 33:  Jesus said: What you hear with your ear (and) with the other ear, proclaim it on your roof-tops. For no one lights a lamp to set it under a bushel, or to put it in a hidden place; but he sets it on the lamp-stand, that all who go in and come out may see its light.

______________

Noa:  Maybe this is referring not to all spreading around all the knowledge everyone gains but is meant for those that can hear the special message in these logion, proclaim that from the rooftops, don’t keep it to yourself.  There is also a hint of passivity here, placing the light in a place where all that walk by it can see it, implies to me that just letting them see it might help pass it on. Live the truth dont preach it, or something like that.

______________

Doug: The first sentence makes me think that Jesus was clarifying that when you encounter a truth that resonates at all levels (in both ears), then you’ve got something worth sharing.  “Proclaim it on your roof-tops” could mean that we are to be vocal and extroverted in spreading that truth that has excited us. But it could also mean that we share it with others by transmitting it through our own higher levels of consciousness.  “Rooftops” are different than “basements.” From a roof-top position, we would be able to help enlighten the world with whatever truth from a place of: 1) compassion, 2) meeting others where they are at, 3) respecting free will, 4) balance, 5) both-and, 6) more nondual, and 7) rooted joy.

Indeed, Jesus follows with saying that a lamp’s light–which is the person vibrating at these higher-nous levels–shines on all and respects the path of all so that each is affirmed according to their free will and chosen path.  What is given to others is an invitation to encountering more love, everywhere.

How different this mentality is than one that demands obedience and doctrinal precision.

  1. Both of your assessments seem to have valid perspectives. Maybe what you hear that resonates with Truth on the external with what you hear with the other ear (internal) proclaim or validate in your higher conscious (rooftop). Don’t hide it from your whole being, mind/body/spirit complex as they come in and out of interaction with the Higher Self. Allow these Truths to resonate and transform your entire Being.
